Oceania is made for trips that mix ocean and mountains. These four stops are the ones that most often make first-time itineraries, followed by routes that keep the flying time down. They are all described in more detail in our wider Oceania must-see guide.
Four essential stops
Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The world’s largest coral reef system runs along the coast of Queensland for about 2,300 km. Base yourself in Cairns or Port Douglas for day trips to the outer reef, or in the Whitsunday Islands for sailing and snorkeling. You do not need to dive: snorkeling from a boat shows plenty of coral and fish. The best months for calm, clear water are May to October.
Milford and Doubtful Sound, New Zealand. Fiordland’s fjords have steep cliffs, waterfalls and rainforest. Milford Sound is easier to reach from Te Anau or Queenstown and takes about two hours on the water. Doubtful Sound is larger and quieter, and the trip needs a boat, a bus and most of a day. The sounds are impressive in rain, when waterfalls appear on every cliff.
Sydney, Australia. The Opera House and Harbour Bridge make the city’s skyline instantly recognizable. Take a harbor ferry to Manly, walk the cliff path from Bondi to Coogee, and book a tour inside the Opera House. Two or three days is enough for the main sights.
Rotorua, New Zealand. The area has steaming geothermal parks, such as Wai-O-Tapu and Te Puia, and a strong Māori cultural presence. Book a guided village visit or an evening hāngī with a Māori-owned operator. Rotorua is about three hours’ drive from Auckland.
Compact routes
- Australia focus, 8–10 days: Sydney, Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, then the Whitsundays. Domestic flights connect each stop.
- New Zealand South, 7–9 days: Queenstown, Te Anau and Milford Sound. A rental car makes this easy, and the drive from Queenstown to Te Anau takes about two hours.
- Pacific sample, 7–10 days: Fiji and Vanuatu. Combine island beaches with village visits and, in Vanuatu, a volcano excursion on Tanna.
Which stops fit which trip
- First-time visitors with 10 days: Sydney plus Cairns and the reef. The flights are short, and the contrast between city and tropics is easy to enjoy.
- Hikers and drivers: The New Zealand South route. Add a day walk such as the Routeburn or Key Summit if the weather is good.
- Beach and culture: The Pacific sample. Fiji gives you resorts and snorkeling, Vanuatu adds volcano visits and village life.
- Combining Australia and New Zealand: Possible in two weeks, but only by choosing one stop in each, for example Sydney and Queenstown with a flight in between. Do not try to cover both countries’ highlights in a single trip.
Flights from Sydney to Queenstown or Auckland take about three to three and a half hours, and Air New Zealand, Qantas and Jetstar all fly the routes. Fiji and Vanuatu are each about three to four hours from Sydney or Auckland.
Planning notes
- Keep transfers short. Australia and New Zealand are far apart, so choose one country or add only one flight between them.
- Alternate active days with relaxed ones, such as a city day followed by a boat day.
- Remember that seasons are reversed, and check our best-time guide for Oceania before booking.
- Book key items early: reef trips, fjord cruises and island accommodation.
