Best Time to Visit Oceania: Seasons for the Reef, New Zealand and the Pacific

Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands have different best seasons. Use this month-by-month table to match your plans to cyclone risk, reef conditions and snow.

Oceania covers a huge area, so there is no single best month. Australia is large enough to have tropical, desert and temperate climates, New Zealand has four distinct seasons, and the Pacific Islands switch between a dry and a wet season. The seasons are also the reverse of the northern hemisphere: December to February is summer.

Best seasons by region

Australia.

  • Cities (Sydney, Melbourne): Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the most comfortable. Summer is hot and busy, and winter is mild but cool and rainy in Melbourne.
  • Tropical north (Cairns, Port Douglas, Darwin): The dry season, May to October, has sunny days, lower humidity and calmer seas for reef trips. The wet season, November to April, brings heavy rain, humidity, stingers (box jellyfish) in the water and a risk of cyclones.
  • Uluru and the Red Centre: April to September has pleasant days but cold nights. Summer temperatures often exceed 40°C.

New Zealand. December to March is the main hiking and cruising season, with long days. Autumn and spring are quieter and often just as pleasant. Winter (June to August) is for skiing. Our detailed New Zealand guide covers the activities and regions.

Pacific Islands (Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga). May to October is the dry season, with lower humidity, steady trade winds and calmer water. The wet season, November to April, is hot and humid, and cyclones are most likely between December and March. Tonga is a special case: humpback whales arrive from July to October.

Questions travelers ask

When is the best reef visibility? From May to October around Cairns, Port Douglas and the Whitsundays. Visibility is also affected by wind and tides, and some operators suspend trips in strong winds.

When should I hike the New Zealand Great Walks? The main season is late October to April. Book huts well in advance, particularly for December to February, and check alpine forecasts.

What about island hopping? May to October is the safest time. Ferries and small flights are still sometimes delayed, so plan a spare day before an international flight home.

What are the stingers? From about November to May, box jellyfish and Irukandji can be present on tropical Queensland beaches. Swim only in marked areas, and wear stinger suits on boat trips.

Logistics to remember

  • Check cyclone seasons for the tropical north of Australia and the Pacific, and buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption.
  • Book popular items early for the high season: Great Walk huts, Milford Sound cruises, reef trips and island resorts.
  • School holidays in Australia and New Zealand (late December to January, and again around Easter and in July) raise prices.

Summary

If your main goal is the reef and islands, travel between May and October. If you want hiking and fjords in New Zealand, travel between December and March. For a combined trip, September to November and March to May are good compromise months, with spring and autumn weather in the south and mostly dry conditions in the north.
