Best Time to Visit North America: Parks, Coasts and Big Cities by Season

When to go to the Southwest parks, the Canadian Rockies, the Pacific Coast and the major East Coast cities, with a month-by-month table and booking tips.

North America is so large that good weather is always happening somewhere. The challenge is matching the region to the month. Arrive at the Grand Canyon in July and the inner canyon trails can reach 40°C or more. Show up in the Canadian Rockies in May and many high trails are still under snow. Here are the best windows for the most popular regions.

The best windows, region by region

Southwest parks (Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Arches). Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) give the best hiking weather, with days of 15–28°C. Summer is very hot in the canyons and in Moab, and it is also the busiest time. Winter can be cold and snowy at higher elevations like the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, which closes from mid-October to mid-May, but it is quiet and can be beautiful.

California and the Pacific Coast. Late spring and early autumn are best. In June and July the coast is often covered with fog (“June gloom”), while September and October are usually clear and warmer. Yosemite’s high-country roads, such as Tioga Pass, open only in late spring or early summer, and the waterfalls are at their fullest in May.

Canadian Rockies (Banff, Jasper). June to September is the main season. Lakes thaw in June, and Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are at their best from late June to September. Larch trees turn golden in late September. Winter has skiing and frozen lakes, but the roads and high trails need preparation.

Big cities (New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Toronto). April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months, with mild days for walking. Summer is hot and humid. Winter is cold, but the museums, theater and holiday lights in New York make it a good time for a city break at lower prices, except around Christmas.

New England. Mid-September to mid-October is the peak fall-colour period, though it is also the most expensive and crowded. Book early.

Mexico City and central Mexico. The dry season, November to April, is the most comfortable. Rainstorms are common in the afternoons from June to September but are usually short.

Planning tips

  1. Check wildfire and hurricane risks. Late summer and autumn can bring wildfire smoke in the West and hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, mainly between August and October. Check forecasts and local advisories a week before travel, and buy flexible tickets or insurance if you are heading to the Southeast.
  2. Start early in summer. In national parks, parking fills up by 8 am at popular trailheads. Aim to start by 6 am and finish before the afternoon heat and thunderstorms.
  3. Book permits and lodging early. Many parks use timed-entry or permit systems. Examples include Arches, Rocky Mountain, Yosemite at certain times, Zion’s Angels Landing and some Grand Canyon trails. Lodging inside parks is often booked up to a year in advance.
  4. Use the shoulder season. May and September give most of the benefits of summer weather, with fewer visitors and lower prices.

Common questions

Can I travel to cities in winter? Yes. New York, Chicago and Toronto have excellent museums, restaurants and shows. Pack a warm coat and book hotels and flights early for the holiday weeks, or travel in January and February for better value.

Is hurricane season a deal-breaker? Not usually. Most of the risk is concentrated in August to October on the Gulf and southeast Atlantic coasts. Get travel insurance, stay flexible and check the forecast.

When is the cheapest time overall? January to March, excluding school holidays and ski resorts. Prices and crowds are lowest in the desert and city destinations from late autumn to early spring, except around Christmas and spring break.

Bottom line

Don’t try to cover the whole continent in one trip. Choose a region, match it to the right month, and be ready to adjust for weather. A trip in May or September is usually the best compromise between conditions, prices and crowds.
