East Africa's Unmissable Sights: Migration, Crater and Coast

The Great Migration, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro views and Stone Town, plus visa, budget and logistics notes for first-time visitors.

If you only get one trip to East Africa, a handful of experiences are worth building it around. None of them need a luxury budget, but all of them reward a bit of planning, mostly around timing, distances and how you book.

The big five experiences

1. The Great Migration. More than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras travel a circular route between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara every year. The sight of herds stretching to the horizon is impressive in any month, but the Mara River crossings (roughly July to October) are the best known. Crocodiles wait at the banks, and the animals sometimes hesitate for hours before plunging in. Whether you see a crossing depends on luck and patience, so give yourself at least three nights in the Mara or northern Serengeti.

2. Ngorongoro Crater. The crater floor is a self-contained world of grassland, swamp and a shallow soda lake. Lions, hyenas, elephants and one of Tanzania’s few remaining black rhino populations live here. Go down at dawn, bring a packed breakfast and leave before the midday crowds. The rim is high and cold, so pack a fleece.

3. Amboseli and Kilimanjaro. Kenya’s Amboseli National Park is flat and open, which makes it one of the best places in Africa to watch elephants. On clear mornings, Kilimanjaro rises behind the herds. Amboseli is dry and dusty, so bring a scarf and a camera lens cover. Even if the summit is hidden, the elephants make the trip worthwhile.

4. Big cats in the Serengeti. The central Serengeti around Seronera is one of the most reliable places to find lions and leopards, which often rest in kopjes (rock outcrops) and sausage trees. Cheetahs hunt on the open plains. A full day on a game drive, with an early start and a late lunch at a picnic site, is the best way to see them.

5. Zanzibar’s Stone Town and the beaches. After days in a safari vehicle, Zanzibar is a gentle landing. Stone Town is a maze of narrow streets, carved doors and old merchants’ houses. Visit the Forodhani night food market, take a spice farm tour and then head to the north or east coast for beaches. Be aware that east-coast beaches have large tidal ranges, so swimming is easier at certain hours.

Two circuits that work

Tanzania (9–12 days): Arusha, Tarangire or Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, then a flight to Zanzibar.

Kenya (8–10 days): Nairobi, Maasai Mara, Amboseli, then Diani or Watamu on the coast.

Each loop uses roads and short bush flights to keep time in transit under a day at each leg. Don’t try to cover Kenya and Tanzania in one short trip. The border crossings are workable but slow, and you’ll spend precious days on the road.

Before you go

Visas. Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation, and Tanzania offers an e-visa. Rules change, so check the official immigration sites for your passport before booking.

Health. A yellow fever certificate may be required if you arrive from certain countries. Ask a travel clinic about malaria prophylaxis and routine vaccines well in advance.

Operators. Choose a registered operator with a track record, clear itineraries and fair prices. Guides matter more than the lodge. A good one reads animal behavior and puts you in the right place at the right time.

Budget. Park fees, vehicles and lodges add up. Mid-range camps with shared game drives are far cheaper than private-vehicle luxury safaris and are still comfortable. Don’t forget tips, usually paid in cash at the end of the trip.

What to wear. Neutral colors (khaki, olive, brown), a warm layer for dawn, a hat, sunglasses and sturdy closed shoes. Avoid bright blue and black in tsetse-fly areas.

Respect the wildlife. Keep to the vehicle, stay quiet and never insist on a closer approach. Good guides will refuse to harass animals.

Final thought

You’ll see more by staying longer in fewer places than by racing through many. Three nights in the Serengeti beat one night each in three parks.
