Top Destinations in Australia: Sydney, the Reef and the Outback

Four reliable highlights for a first trip to Australia, with two sample routes and advice on distances, heat and booking reef tours.

Australia rewards focus. Distances are huge: Sydney to Cairns or to Uluru is about 2,000 km each way, so most first trips stick to two or three regions. These four places make a strong core.

Sydney

The harbor is the star. Walk from Circular Quay to the Opera House and the Royal Botanic Garden, take the ferry to Manly, and wander The Rocks. For something more adventurous, climb the Harbour Bridge or walk the coastal path from Bondi to Coogee.

  • Stay: 3–4 nights.
  • Add-ons: The Blue Mountains (a day trip by train) or Taronga Zoo by ferry.
  • Tip: Buy an Opal card for trains, buses and ferries.

Cairns and Port Douglas: the reef and rainforest

These are the main gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system. Day boats leave from both towns for outer reef pontoons and snorkeling or diving sites.

  • Reef: Pick a small-group operator and an outer reef site for better coral.
  • Rainforest: The Daintree Rainforest, north of Port Douglas, is one of the world’s oldest. Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation are popular stops.
  • Best months: June to October.
  • Tip: Book early and check the weather the day before. Boats can cancel in rough seas.

The Whitsundays

Seventy-four islands off the Queensland coast, famed for sailing, snorkeling and Whitehaven Beach, with its silky white sand. Stay on an island resort, in Airlie Beach, or join a two- or three-night sailing trip.

  • Tip: Visit Hill Inlet lookout early to avoid crowds. Sailing trips book out in the dry season.

Uluru and the Red Centre

Uluru, a huge sandstone monolith, is sacred to the Anangu people. Climbing it has been banned since 2019, but you can walk the 10-km base trail, see Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) nearby, and watch sunrise or sunset change the rock’s color.

  • Stay: 2–3 nights. Add Kings Canyon if you can.
  • Best months: May to September.
  • Tip: Walk early, as heat can be extreme. Respect the cultural guidelines and rules posted at the park.

Two sample routes

City and reef (10–12 days)

Sydney (4 nights) → fly to Cairns (4–5 nights, including a reef day and a Daintree day) → add 2 nights in the Whitsundays if you have time.

Reef and outback (10 days)

Cairns (4 nights) → fly to Uluru via Sydney or Alice Springs (3 nights) → finish with 2–3 nights in Sydney or Melbourne.

Beyond the core

  • Melbourne: Laneways, coffee, street art and a gateway to the Great Ocean Road.
  • Tasmania: Wilderness hiking, Hobart’s MONA museum and fresh seafood.
  • Western Australia: Perth, Margaret River wine and Ningaloo Reef.

Planning notes

  • Minimize flights. Choose fewer destinations and stay longer.
  • Start early on the reef. Many tours depart by 8 am.
  • Prepare for the outback. Carry plenty of water, use sunscreen and a hat, and use insect repellent in summer.
  • Check visas. Most visitors need an ETA or eVisitor before arriving.
  • Plan around holidays. Late December and January are expensive, and accommodation sells out.
