Asia covers monsoon rainforests, deserts, Himalayan peaks and temperate islands, so there is no single best season. The key is to understand the monsoon, which brings wet and dry periods to most of South and Southeast Asia, and to avoid the extremes of each region.
Regional seasons
Southeast Asia: November–March
Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Indonesia are generally best in the cooler, drier months.
- Thailand, Cambodia, Laos: November–February is dry and pleasant. March–May gets very hot (40°C is common in Bangkok and at Angkor).
- Thai islands: The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is best from November to April. The Gulf side (Koh Samui) has a different pattern and is often good from January to August.
- Vietnam: The country is long, and each region differs. Hanoi and the north are best in autumn and spring, Hue and Hoi An in February–July, and Ho Chi Minh City from December to April.
- Bali: April–October is the dry season, with July and August the busiest.
East Asia: spring and autumn
- Japan: Late March to early April for cherry blossoms, and late October to November for autumn color. Summer is hot and humid, with a rainy season (tsuyu) in June.
- South Korea: April–May and September–November. Winters are cold, with good skiing.
- China: Spring and autumn are best for most places. Summer is hot and crowded, and national holidays (early October, Lunar New Year) are extremely busy.
- Taiwan: October–April is more comfortable. Typhoons can occur from July to October.
South Asia: October–March
- India: Cooler months suit the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) and Rajasthan. The monsoon runs from about June to September, and the Himalayas and Ladakh are best from June to September, when the roads are open.
- Nepal: October–November and March–April for trekking.
- Sri Lanka: The west and south coasts are best from December to March, while the east coast is better from April to September.
Middle East: October–April
Jordan, Oman, the UAE and Israel are comfortable in winter and spring. Summers are extremely hot, with temperatures above 40°C common.
Festivals worth planning around
- Cherry blossom (Japan, late March–April): Timing shifts by year and region. Check forecasts before booking.
- Lunar New Year (January–February): Spectacular in cities like Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei, but transport and hotels fill up, and many businesses close in China and Vietnam for a week or more.
- Songkran (Thailand, mid-April): A nationwide water festival. Fun, but also very wet and busy.
- Diwali (India, October–November): Lights and celebrations across the country. Book trains and hotels early.

FAQ
How do I avoid the monsoon? Choose the dry side of the region or travel in the dry months. Monsoon rains often come in heavy afternoon bursts, not all-day downpours, so travel isn’t always ruined, and prices are lower.
Which festivals are worth timing? Cherry blossoms, Lunar New Year and Diwali are the most popular. Book early.
Is summer OK for cities? Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing are hot and humid in July and August. Plan indoor activities and early starts, or go to the mountains.
Practical tips
